Newark Liberty ‘s Terminal B Showcase: Creating Bracelets, and Second Chances

The Port Authority’s nearly $350-million transformation of Terminal B at Newark Liberty International Airport includes a fresh take on the airport’s retail promenade, with architectural elements inspired by the Jersey Shore and, for the first time, dedicated pop-up space for local artisans, entrepreneurs and worthy causes, such as Same Sky.

Same Sky is an artisan trade initiative that currently works with two different groups of women pursuing the same mission: securing a more promising future through craftsmanship and entrepreneurship. The groups of women are survivors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide or local ex-offenders released from the Hudson County Jail. Through the quiet and meditative practice of beading, the women not only create a highly marketable and appealing product, but they are engaging in a kind of therapy.

“We are always proud to support local initiatives and entrepreneurs,” said Diane Papaianni, General Manager of Newark Liberty International Airport. “With the busy holiday shopping season, our customers not only have the opportunity to ‘shop local,’ but can also purchase a truly meaningful gift from a worthy cause.”

Their hand-made one-of-kind bracelets are for sale in a pop-up shop inside Terminal B in time for the gift-giving season. Same Sky jewelry is also sold at various other locations and online at https://www.samesky.com with proceeds going to the artisans and toward the organization’s continuing effort to help women in need.

“By giving people economic opportunities, rather than locking them up, we can reduce crime, rid prisons of overcrowding, and transform the lives of individuals and families all across the country,” said noted entrepreneur and philanthropist Francine LeFrak, who founded Same Sky in 2007 to help women in need succeed through steady employment.

Same Sky partnered with the women of the Most Excellent Way Halfway House of New Jersey to develop artisans in the U.S. through mentoring and job training. Many of the women now earn a sustainable income and several have gone on to complete their educations and explore career options.

“Francine LeFrak and Same Sky have provided an extraordinary opportunity for our women clients to create beautiful jewelry, to subsidize their income, and to enable them to pursue their education and professional training,” said former Gov. James McGreevey, who has been working with the halfway house. “During this holiday season, when many travelers will be passing through Terminal B for international flights, hopefully customers will appreciate the mission of Same Sky.”

Added Papaianni: “I thank the women of Same Sky for introducing their products to our airport. They are raising awareness and setting a positive example of coming back from adversity.”

Officer Nick Farfalla is congratulated by his grandfather Retired Detective Lieutenant Frank Farfalla (left) and his father Retired Lieutenant Frank S. Farfalla (right)

Newly graduated Officer Nicholas Farfalla has deep roots in the Port Authority Police Department. Last week during a graduation ceremony of the Port Authority Police Academy at the Thomas Dunn Sports Center in Elizabeth, N.J. Nick became the third-generation of his family to become a police officer — and the third successive family member to serve at the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) command.

Nick, 23, will wear the same badge that was pinned 30 years ago on his father, now retired Lieutenant Frank S. Farfalla, and that also was pinned on his grandfather, Detective Lieutenant Frank Farfalla, 60 years ago. Nick’s grandfather and father served the PAPD for 38 years and 30 years, respectively.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Ramapo College, Nick, who lives in Ridgefield, N.J. considered a number of different career options. While growing up, he had often visited his father’s command at the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT), but being a police officer wasn’t initially at the top of his career wish list.

“Both my dad and grandpa would tell me how great it was being a cop and always encourage me to follow in their footsteps,” Nick recalled. “I took the exam just to appease them. But as time passed, the thought of being a police officer grew on me, and I realized it’s what I wanted to do.”

Nick’s father knew early on that being a police officer was his calling. His father would take Frank S. to the bus terminal when he was young. After seeing firsthand how fascinating the terminal was in the ‘70’s, he decided to work there, too.

The family is very excited about the growing PAPD dynasty. “It was always in his blood to be a police officer. He just didn’t realize it until now,” Frank S. said of his newly graduated son.

While the Farfallas’ story is rare, it is not the first time three generations of PAPD officers within the same family had graduated the police academy. Officer Thomas A. Kennedy, who graduated in 2014, also wore the shield number and badge of his father and grandfather who preceded him. And all three Kennedys served the same command at Kennedy Airport.
